Twitter: The difference between listeners and followers

There are a lot of  “get thousands of followers in less than x days!” but for what? Why do you want many followers? I have asked myself that question.

Let’s use some Twitter slang…

I am currently following around 1000 Tweeple. That doesn’t mean that I can read all their Tweets.  No one (almost) are using the original Twitter interface, they are using TweetDeck like me, or some other application. In TweetDeck I can group the people I follow. That is the answer to who do I listen to. I make small groups with 10 or so people that I like to read but now and then I change add someone and remove some.

The question is who are you listening to and who is listening to you, not who are you following.

I have almost 1200 followers (mostly persons), nothing to brag about but 1200 is a big number of people. When I send out a Tweet I use to shorten the link with twurl or bit.ly so I can follow up how many that are clicking on my links. I send out something that can easily be read by 1200 persons and I normally get 15-30 clicks depending of what the subject is….

The interesting part is that this number have not changed much since I had 300 followers. Now, does that mean that I have let’s say 30 listeners? Yes I think so. Every listener doesn’t click on every link from me so let’s say 35-40 listeners out of 1200 followers.  Let me coin a new term: Twisteners.  From 1200 Tweeps I get 40 Twisteners!

What are your numbers? Do you have a similar ratio?

I suppose that Britney Spears or some other superstar get many listeners just because they are famous but I am thinking about all the others, us who start without fans, except our wife or husband!
